The Abe River near Fuchu, circa 1833 – 1834. Utagawa Hiroshige, (1797 - 1858). This print, shows travelers crossing the river near Fuchu, now a commercial center in western Tokyo. At right a woman rides in a palanquin atop a platform carried by porters wading through the chest-deep water. From the opposite direction, two men lead a pack horse while a third man helps balance the load on the horse's back. Details about pack horses can be found in the book, “Lost Traditions: Horses and Horse Medicine in pre-Modern Japan.”
