A Japanese rider from an Edo-era scroll, riding Chidoriashi (千鳥足), likely a gallop of some sort. The sound of the horse’s steps in this gait is said to sound like the wings of plovers in flight. A full description can be found in the book, “Lost Traditions: Horses and Horse Medicine in pre-Modern Japan.”
