A Japanese rider from an Edo-era scroll, riding HAKOBIASHI (運足). The word hakobu means to “carry, transport, or move.” This is definitely a gallop of some sort, likely at a slower pace, perhaps some sort of a collected gallop, medium speed gallop, canter, or lope. A full description can be found in the book, “Lost Traditions: Horses and Horse Medicine in pre-Modern Japan.”
